The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an urgent weather advisory as two low-pressure systems near the archipelago threaten to create hazardous maritime conditions in the coming days.
According to today's meteorological bulletin, a strengthening low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, east of the Maldives, is expected to intensify into a powerful weather system within the next 24 hours. The system is projected to move northwestward, advancing towards the coastal regions of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, India.
Adding to the weather concerns, a second low-pressure system has formed in the southeast of the Maldives, creating a dual weather phenomenon that will significantly impact local conditions.
The Met Office predicts a five-day period of intense weather beginning Wednesday, with southern atolls experiencing wind speeds of 15-25 miles per hour, while central and northern atolls will face winds between 13-23 miles per hour. These conditions will result in rough seas across all Maldivian waters.
Maritime safety concerns have prompted authorities to issue a special advisory to all seafarers, strongly urging them to exercise extreme caution and thoroughly verify safety measures before embarking on any sea journeys.
This weather pattern coincides with the traditional transitional period between monsoons, typically characterized by rough seas and increased precipitation. The development comes as the Maldives prepares for the onset of the easterly monsoon, which is scheduled to begin next month.
