ree

Transparency Maldives has called for an independent investigation into the death of Adam Athhar, who was found dead in custody after being arrested for holding a woman hostage at knifepoint.

Athhar reportedly died yesterday evening while receiving treatment for injuries sustained in an apparent suicide attempt at Dhoonidhoo Jail. According to a timeline released by the police, Athhar was found hanging in his cell at 7:02 PM. He was immediately taken down and transferred to Dhoonidhoo Clinic within minutes. Subsequently, he was transported to Male via speedboat and arrived at IGMH Emergency at 7:25 PM.

In a statement released today, Transparency Maldives expressed concern over the circumstances leading to Athhar's death while in police custody. The organization has urged the Human Rights Commission, National Integrity Commission, and all relevant state institutions to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident.

The statement emphasized the importance of examining the reasons behind Athhar's arrest and the decision to keep him in remand custody, considering his medical condition. Transparency Maldives also called for the investigation to be conducted with full respect for Athhar's family, ensuring they receive complete information throughout the process.

The organization reminded that it is the state's responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in custody.

This incident has raised questions about the treatment of detainees and the protocols in place for monitoring high-risk individuals in Maldivian detention facilities. The case continues to draw public attention, with many calling for a comprehensive review of custodial practices and mental health support for detainees.

Background: Adam Athhar was arrested last Thursday after he held a woman, believed to be his partner, at knifepoint and attempted to flee on a motorcycle. The police intervened, rescuing the woman and apprehending Athhar. He had been in custody since the incident, awaiting trial.
