The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to be cautious about a rapidly spreading eye infection during this western monsoon season.
The HPA noted that eye infections can be caused by various types of bacteria and viruses. They advised that if anyone suspects they have an eye infection, they should seek medical attention from a doctor or healthcare provider as soon as possible.
The HPA highlighted five main symptoms of eye infections:
Fever
Eye irritation
Watery eyes
Eye discharge
Redness of the eye
The HPA urged people to take preventive measures to protect themselves from eye infections. These include:
Washing hands frequently with soap
Cleaning commonly touched objects and surfaces
Avoiding touching or rubbing the eyes
Additional precautions to prevent eye infections:
Safely disposing of used tissues
Not sharing eye drops with someone who has an eye infection
The HPA noted that this highly contagious disease can affect people of all ages, including very young children. The infection often spreads when a family member contracts it or through close contact with infected individuals.
