Heavy Rains Prompt WAMCO's Plea for Responsible Waste Disposal

ree

As Malé City experiences heavy rainfall, the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has issued an urgent appeal to residents, emphasizing the importance of proper waste disposal to maintain uninterrupted garbage collection services.

In a social media post, WAMCO urged households to ensure easy access for their waste collection staff and refrain from placing garbage on the streets. The corporation stressed that even if waste collection is delayed, residents should not resort to leaving trash outside. Instead, they are encouraged to contact WAMCO's hotline at 1666 to address any issues.

The ongoing downpour has led to flooding in many of Malé's streets, raising concerns about potential health hazards if waste is improperly disposed of. WAMCO warned that rain could spread garbage across the streets, contaminating the area and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

In addition to proper waste disposal, WAMCO called on the public to heed their staff's instructions when using transfer stations to ensure everyone's safety and security.

Meanwhile, various government entities, including state-owned companies, ministries, and the Malé City Council, are collaborating to manage the flooding situation in different parts of the capital. The Maldives Police Service, MNDF, and even members of the People's Majlis have joined the efforts to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains.

As the entire Maldives faces inclement weather, authorities and citizens are working together to maintain essential services and public safety. WAMCO's appeal underscores the critical role of community cooperation in effective waste management, particularly during challenging weather conditions.
