Hong Kong Airlines has resumed flights to the Maldives, providing a huge boost to the island nation's tourism industry. The move, which follows a two-year halt due to the pandemic, is expected to add to the rising number of Chinese arrivals.
The Chinese market is an important source of tourists for the Maldives, and the return of direct flights is viewed as a promising indication for the country's economic recovery.
The Maldives has been trying hard to attract Chinese tourists in recent years, with marketing campaigns and new hotel openings. The country has also been praised for its fortitude in the face of the pandemic, making it an even more enticing destination for tourists.
The reintroduction of Hong Kong Airlines makes the Maldives considerably more accessible to Chinese tourists. This is projected to result in a large rise in arrivals in the following months, helping to consolidate the Maldives' reputation as a popular destination among Chinese tourists.
Over the last decade, the Maldives has seen an unprecedented surge of Chinese tourists, changing its tourism business. In 2014, Chinese travellers made up only 9% of all arrivals. By 2019, that figure had risen to 21%, becoming China the primary source of tourists and a substantial contribution to the Maldives' economy. Their spending habits, notably on luxury things and excursions, have benefited the tourist industry, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the GDP.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic struck a severe blow, with travel restrictions resulting in a significant drop in arrivals. Despite this setback, Hong Kong Airlines' recent resume of flights provides some optimism for recovery. While concerns about sustainability and overtourism persist, the Maldives continues to negotiate the Chinese tourist boom, recognising its economic potential while striving to balance it with environmental responsibilities.
