Adam Athuharu, the man who recently held a woman at knifepoint in Male, Maldives, is reportedly alive following an apparent suicide attempt while in police custody, according to the Maldives Police Service.

Police Commissioner Ali Shuja commented on, stating that Athuharu is still alive and that doctors have confirmed his survival. However, conflicting reports from local media suggest that Athuharu may have succumbed to his injuries.

The incident occurred last Thursday night when Athuharu, who had been recently pardoned and released by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, took his alleged girlfriend hostage. He was seen holding a knife to the woman's throat and attempted to flee on a motorcycle with her.

The dramatic scene unfolded in the streets of Male, where a crowd had gathered, impeding Athuharu's escape. Police officers pursued the motorcycle, and the situation came to a head when an officer struck Athuharu with a baton, causing him and the hostage to fall from the vehicle. Police then swarmed the scene, apprehending Athuharu and rescuing the woman.

Following his arrest, Athuharu was treated at ADK Hospital for head injuries sustained during the apprehension. After his condition improved, he was transferred to jail.

The attempted suicide reportedly took place while Athuharu was in detention. The police have confirmed that he tried to take his own life, but the exact circumstances remain unclear.

This latest development adds another layer of complexity to an already shocking incident that has captivated the attention of the Maldivian public. Authorities are expected to provide more details as the situation unfolds, particularly regarding Athuharu's current condition and the ongoing investigation into both the hostage situation and the events that followed his arrest.

The case has raised questions about the effectiveness of the pardon system and the monitoring of released offenders, as Athuharu had been freed by the previous administration shortly before this incident occurred.
