Maldives President Condemns Israel's Actions in Gaza at UN Assembly

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu called for international action against Israel's military campaign in Gaza, characterizing it as "acts of terrorism" and violations of international law.

Muizzu emphasized the need for a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He argued that the global community must not tolerate the infringement of rights by any nation, regardless of its size, wealth, or political alliances.

The Maldivian leader expressed deep concern over the mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, describing the situation as a "genocide" and a "travesty of justice." He also highlighted the recent Israeli raids in Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths.

Muizzu criticized the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for targeting journalists, suggesting that these actions were attempts to conceal the extent of the violence in Gaza. He welcomed the UN's decision to grant Palestine a seat in the General Assembly.

The ongoing conflict, which began after Hamas' cross-border attack on October 7 last year, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Israeli officials report nearly 1,200 Israeli deaths, while Gaza health authorities state that Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of approximately 41,400 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, with over 95,700 injured.

The Maldivian President's speech comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, raising fears of a potential wider regional conflict. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, the violence in Gaza continues unabated.

Muizzu's impassioned plea at the UN underscores the growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
