The Maldivian government has intensified its efforts to address the issue of illegal foreign workers, resulting in the deportation of 3,322 expatriates since mid-November last year. This information was revealed by the Home Ministry, citing data from the Maldives Immigration.

According to the Home Ministry, the deportations took place between November 17, 2022, and March 25, 2023, as part of a major operation to tackle the problem of undocumented foreign workers in the country. The ministry also reported that immigration authorities have conducted raids on 257 locations during this period.

The government has launched a comprehensive approach to resolve the issue of illegal immigrants, involving collaboration between various state institutions. The Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service are working together to identify and take action against foreign nationals engaged in unauthorized business activities.

Authorities have emphasized that employing illegal immigrants is a criminal offense, and stern legal action will be taken against those found guilty of such practices. The Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, had previously warned employers about the legal consequences of hiring undocumented workers.

The government's initiative aims to bring the current foreign worker population in line with regulations and address the serious issue of expatriates involved in businesses reserved for Maldivian nationals. This deportation drive is part of a broader strategy to regulate the foreign labor market and ensure compliance with the country's immigration laws.

As the operation continues, the Maldivian government remains committed to finding a comprehensive solution to the challenges posed by illegal immigration while maintaining a balance in the country's workforce.
