Severe Flooding Hits Maldives Capital and Other Islands

ree

The Maldives is experiencing widespread flooding due to heavy monsoon rains, with the capital Malé and several other islands severely affected. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that the full extent of damage is still being assessed.

In Malé, floodwaters have inundated streets and entered homes, causing damage to parked vehicles and property. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service has been deployed to pump water from affected areas.

The island of Hoarafushi in Haa Alif Atoll has been particularly hard hit, with six families evacuated due to flooding in their homes. In Ihavandhu, also in Haa Alif Atoll, around 12 houses have been affected by floodwaters, with some reporting water seeping through floor tiles.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for much of the country, warning of strong winds up to 50 mph and high waves between 6 to 9 feet. They have also cautioned about the possibility of tidal surges in some islands during high tide.

Other affected islands include Uligamu, Kelaa, Baarah, Dhidhdhoo, Kulhudhuffushi, Naifaru, Kurendhoo, Dhaandhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo, spanning multiple atolls across the country.

Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and stay alert as the adverse weather is expected to continue. The MNDF and local councils are working to mitigate the impact of flooding and provide assistance to affected communities.
