A devastating monsoon storm has wreaked havoc across the Maldives, with Lh. Kurendhoo bearing the brunt of the damage as more than 70 households face severe flooding and extensive property damage.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that emergency response teams are actively working to mitigate the flooding in Kurendhoo, employing pumps and creating drainage channels to remove the accumulated water from the island's residential areas.
The impact of this severe weather system has extended beyond Kurendhoo, affecting multiple regions from the southern atolls through the central islands to the northern archipelago. In a particularly serious incident in D. Bandithoo, two houses suffered significant roof damage, forcing authorities to provide temporary shelter to seven displaced residents.
Meteorological officials attribute the adverse weather conditions to a low-level circulation system that has developed during the transitional period between the southwest and northeast monsoons. In response to the severe weather threat, authorities have issued weather alerts across several atolls. A white alert remains in effect from R. Atoll to L. Atoll, while a yellow alert covers the region from B. Atoll to ADh. Atoll.
The NDMA continues to monitor the situation closely as emergency response efforts remain ongoing across the affected regions. Residents in alert zones are advised to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines as the weather system persists.
