Vice President Slams Opposition's 'Low-Level' Public Criticism

Vice President Hussein Mohamed Latheef has strongly condemned what he describes as "degrading" criticism of the public by opposition figures, specifically responding to recent comments made by presidential candidate Umar Nasir on Channel 13.

During a recent appearance on Channel 13's NewsTalk program, Umar Nasir made several pointed remarks about the current administration, suggesting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu should not assume public protests won't lead to governmental change. Nasir accused the current administration of making dishonesty a "basic practice" and frequently changing their stance on issues.

The presidential candidate further claimed that the Muizzu administration has lost public trust faster than any previous government. He boldly predicted that President Muizzu would face defeat in the upcoming presidential election, stating he would "have to go home."

In his controversial remarks, Nasir alleged that President Muizzu was initially brought to power with two primary objectives: to secure former President Yameen's release and to remove Indian military personnel from the Maldives. He pointed out that despite these goals, Indian troops remain stationed in three different areas of the Maldives, and claimed that Muizzu's government has actually ordered President Yameen's imprisonment.

Responding to these statements through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vice President Latheef defended the administration, stating that "mocking citizens under the guise of criticism and portraying them as uncivilized and undemocratic is a low-level act."

The Vice President emphasized that President Muizzu has always been open to constructive criticism, describing this quality as essential for any political leader or public servant dedicated to serving the nation and its people. He maintained that while criticism is welcome, it should be delivered respectfully and constructively rather than through personal attacks or public ridicule.

This exchange highlights the growing tension between the government and opposition figures as the country moves closer to its next presidential election, with both sides presenting contrasting narratives about the administration's performance and public sentiment.
