In a significant move to enhance its service offerings, the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has inaugurated a new waste collection service targeting resorts in the Maldives. The official launch took place today during a ceremony held at the Male Waste Transfer Station.
The initiative kicked off with the signing of an agreement between WAMCO and Cora Cora Maldives Resort, marking the beginning of this expanded service. WAMCO officials explained that this new venture aims to address the challenges resorts face in transporting waste to WAMCO's regional transfer stations.
Under this new service, WAMCO vessels will collect waste from all registered resorts, providing a more efficient and streamlined waste management solution for the tourism sector. The corporation emphasized that this approach would help overcome logistical hurdles previously encountered by resorts.
In line with the 5th amendment to the Maldives Waste Management Regulation, gazetted by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Energy on August 17, 2021, WAMCO clarified that resort waste must be segregated into four categories before collection. These categories include plastic, kitchen waste, glass/metal, and other miscellaneous waste.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in WAMCO's efforts to improve waste management practices across the Maldives, particularly in the crucial tourism sector. By offering this service, WAMCO aims to ensure more effective and environmentally responsible waste handling for the nation's resort islands.
