The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has officially launched its operations on Maafushi Island in Kaafu Atoll, marking a significant expansion of its services.

The inauguration ceremony, held on Thursday, was presided over by Thoriq Ibrahim, the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy. In attendance were WAMCO's Managing Director Mujtaba Jaleel, members of the Maafushi Council, and representatives from various local institutions.

Minister Thoriq emphasized that the introduction of WAMCO's services in Maafushi was a direct response to requests from the island's council and residents. He highlighted the potential benefits for Maafushi, noting its prominence in local tourism and suggesting that improved waste management would contribute to the island's further development.

The minister also underscored President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's close attention to waste management issues. He mentioned the government's five-year plan, which outlines sustainable waste management strategies.

According to WAMCO, the initial phase of their service in Maafushi will focus on daily household waste collection. Residents can register for the service, with fees to be included in their STELCO electricity bills. Additionally, WAMCO will offer a separate service for those wishing to dispose of waste independently, charging a gate fee of 500 rufiyaa per ton based on the registered capacity of the waste transport vessel.

Speaking at the event, WAMCO's Managing Director Mujtaba Jaleel stressed the crucial role of island councils in maintaining sustainable waste management services. He called for close collaboration between WAMCO and the local council, stating, "If we work hand in hand with the council, adapting to their perspective, we can achieve complete success in this endeavor."

This expansion of WAMCO's services to Maafushi represents a significant step in the Maldives' ongoing efforts to improve waste management across its islands, particularly in areas with growing tourism sectors.
