The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has launched its services in two new cities, Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi. The corporation announced that it will begin by collecting daily household waste in these urban areas.
Residents of both cities can now register for waste collection services through WAMCO's website. The company has also made provisions for individuals who prefer to dispose of waste independently. These self-disposers can access the waste management facility by paying a gate fee of 108 rufiyaa per ton, based on their vehicle's registered tonnage.
WAMCO's services extend beyond households to include businesses and government institutions. The pricing structure varies according to the type of entity: businesses will be charged 0.16 rufiyaa per liter, households will pay a flat rate of 150 rufiyaa, government institutions will be billed 1.27 rufiyaa per liter, and state-owned companies will be charged 2.66 rufiyaa per kilogram when bringing waste to the transfer station.
In line with the 5th amendment to the Maldives Waste Management Regulation, gazetted on August 17, 2021, by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, WAMCO emphasizes the importance of waste segregation. The corporation will only accept waste that has been properly separated into categories such as plastic, kitchen waste, and other types.
Looking ahead, WAMCO plans to introduce additional services in Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi for disposing of bulky waste items. These services, known as CAPS and CAPS Light, will be rolled out in the coming days, further enhancing waste management capabilities in these cities.
This expansion of WAMCO's services marks a significant step in improving waste management practices across the Maldives, promoting environmental sustainability and public health in urban areas.
