WAMCO Introduces Eco-Friendly Bin Liners Amid Plastic Bag Fee Implementation

In response to the recent implementation of a 2 rufiyaa fee on plastic bags, the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has launched a new initiative to provide environmentally friendly bin liners to the public. This move comes as a solution to address concerns raised by citizens regarding the additional cost for waste disposal.

The new bin liners, which are exempt from the plastic bag fee, are now available for purchase at various locations across Male' and Hulhumale'. In Male', residents can obtain these liners from Luxury Store on Majeedhee Magu, Thoori Store on Sosun Magu, and HCU Mart on Alikilegefaanu Magu. Hulhumale' residents can find them at Fahi Plaza on Huvandhumaa Hingun.

WAMCO has introduced two colors for the bin liners: green for biodegradable waste and black for other types of waste. This color-coding system aims to promote proper waste segregation and management. The company offers different sizes to cater to various needs. A standard size (L) pack containing 100 bags (17 inches long) is priced at 35 rufiyaa, while larger sizes (XXL - 27 inches and XXXL - 48 inches) are available for 165 rufiyaa per pack.

To ensure wider accessibility, WAMCO has made these bin liners available at their customer front offices and waste transfer stations throughout Male'. Additionally, customers can place orders through WAMCO's website for added convenience.

It's important to note that while the new law mandates a fee for plastic bags, certain exceptions apply. Raw fish packaging and bags provided by duty-free shops are not subject to the 2 rufiyaa charge.

WAMCO urges the public to use these specially designed bin liners exclusively for waste disposal purposes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote responsible waste management and reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastics in the Maldives.

As the country adapts to these new waste management regulations, WAMCO's introduction of fee-exempt bin liners serves as a practical solution to balance environmental concerns with public convenience.
