The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) aims to generate 7 million in revenue from its cleaning services, according to Managing Director Mujtaba Jaleel.
Traditionally, private companies have been handling the cleaning of buildings, especially government offices. Recently, WAMCO announced its entry into the cleaning services sector.
Speaking to state media, MD Mujtaba revealed that WAMCO has already begun cleaning operations for six companies. He added that they plan to start servicing an additional 10 companies within the next two months.
"This means we will see a significant increase in revenue. Our initial target is to reach approximately 7 million," Mujtaba stated.
The main objective of this initiative is to provide "value for money" for government expenditure, according to the MD. He noted that private sector contractors often submit very low bids that don't align with the actual cost of providing the service, resulting in subpar quality.
Mujtaba emphasized that WAMCO will maintain high standards through proper supervision and will primarily employ Maldivians for these services.
He highlighted that this initiative would create job opportunities for various age groups, particularly women who wish to enter the workforce after raising children.
The MD also pointed out the economic benefits of employing locals, stating that it would keep money circulating within the Maldivian economy and reduce the demand for foreign currency.
