ree

A significant milestone in waste management was achieved today as the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) officially inaugurated its services in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The ceremony, graced by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, marked a crucial step towards addressing the challenges of waste management in the Maldives.

Minister Thoriq, in his address, welcomed WAMCO, the Thinadhoo Council, and the island's residents to this new partnership. He highlighted the obstacles faced in managing waste across the Maldives, citing limited resources and the geographical dispersion of islands as key challenges in implementing cost-effective and comprehensive waste management solutions.

To tackle these issues, the government has launched the "My Clean Maldives" project, aligning with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's campaign promises. This five-year initiative aims to establish effective waste management practices across all regions of the Maldives. Minister Thoriq revealed that a master plan has been developed, dividing the country into seven zones to ensure a holistic approach to waste management.

The "My Clean Maldives" program, inaugurated in February by First Lady Sajida Mohamed, is a national endeavor to create a more environmentally sustainable Maldives. It forms part of the government's 14-week roadmap, fulfilling the pledge to "develop and implement a national project schedule for managing waste on the islands."

The primary objectives of this program include establishing environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management systems, developing regional centers for proper waste disposal, and creating efficient transportation networks between these centers and the islands. Additionally, the initiative focuses on conducting training programs and awareness campaigns at both local and regional levels to promote safe waste management practices.

This comprehensive approach aims to address the unique challenges posed by the Maldives' geography while working towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for the nation. The launch of WAMCO's services in Thinadhoo represents a significant step forward in realizing these ambitious goals, setting a precedent for similar developments across the country.
