The Maldives Meteorological Service has urged the public to exercise caution as the southwest monsoon is expected to intensify in the region including the Maldives starting from next Sunday. The Met Office also predicts heavy rainfall across a large part of the country in the coming week.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, the weather is expected to deteriorate for the next five days starting from Sunday. They forecast that the southwest monsoon will strengthen, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rain to much of the country. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 45 miles per hour in the open seas. The Met Office also warns of rough seas during this period.
In light of this situation, the Met Office has advised seafarers to plan their trips carefully for the upcoming week, taking into account the weather conditions. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued safety guidelines to the public.
The NDMA advises residents to take precautionary measures to prevent water from entering homes due to potential flooding. They recommend moving valuable items to higher ground to protect them from water damage. In case of strong winds, they suggest securing roofs in advance to prevent them from being blown away.
Additionally, the NDMA has instructed households to stock up on essential food items and necessities in preparation for the adverse weather.
The Met Office notes that the southwest monsoon typically affects the Maldives from mid-May to the end of November
