The Maldives' innovative sea-to-air cargo transit network has welcomed its newest partner, World Cargo Airlines, marking another significant milestone in the country's expanding logistics sector.
The Malaysian carrier has already commenced operations, successfully transporting its inaugural shipment of textile goods from Bangladesh to various European destinations via the Maldives' transit hub. This addition brings the total number of participating airlines to twelve since the program's launch.
Introduced in March 2023 under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's economic strengthening initiatives, the sea-to-air cargo service has rapidly emerged as a lucrative venture for the island nation. The program, which facilitates the transfer of sea freight to air cargo for international distribution, mirrors successful models implemented in various countries worldwide.
The service represents a collaborative effort between key national entities: Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and Maldives Customs Service. Since its operational launch in May, the program has generated impressive returns, contributing over $3 million to the national economy, according to MPL officials.
This strategic logistics solution, which transforms the Maldives into a vital transit hub, continues to expand rapidly. MPL reports strong growth momentum, suggesting the program's increasing significance in global supply chain networks. The service exemplifies how island nations can leverage their geographic position to create new economic opportunities, following successful models that have proven beneficial to numerous countries' economies worldwide.
